Helping Families Support Their Loved One

"Call it a clan, call it a network, call it a tribe, call it a family. Whatever you call it, whoever you are... you need one."~Jane Howard

Alzheimer's disease presents an extremely difficult journey for families.

Watching someone who nurtured you, loved you and comforted you become unable to complete a single thought or sentence can be devastating. Those of us caring for residents with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias also must care for the families of residents and caring for the minds and spirits of both.

For the resident to be successful and staff to partner with families, we strongly encourage our family members to provide their loved one's Personal Narrative. The Personal Narrative includes the resident's family history, work history, personal relationships and important documents and letters that hold significant meaning --- materials that capture the essence of who that person was and is. The Personal Narrative provides wonderful opportunities for staff, families and volunteers to reminisce. The chance for real engagement and validation is felt each time the Personal Narrative is incorporated.
