Silvia Barrios
Home Service Coordinator & Scheduler
What started as a brief detour in Silvia Barrios’ career path is now her dream job. After earning a special education teaching degree in conjunction with her teaching degree from Universidad del Valle de Guatemala, Silvia worked in the Maple Grove and Robbinsdale school district in the Early Childhood Family Education Program.
Silvia took a sabbatical to raise her children and tutor college students in Spanish. She also was looking for a job with overnight hours so she could be with her two young sons during the day, which brought her to English Rose Suites in 2001.
Silvia accepted a promotion as Team Mentor in 2007, where she mentored new staff throughout the initial training process and worked closely with the families of residents.
In December 2009, Silvia was promoted again as the Home Services Coordinator. “My goal every day is to visit all of our homes and make sure each resident is happy and feels like a million dollars, as well as support the staff and do whatever I can to make their day easier,” Silvia says. “I am so blessed to wake up and go to a job I love; people have to remind me to go home at the end of the day.”
Silvia has spoken at the Alzheimer’s Association’s Minnesota-North Dakota Meeting of the Minds Dementia Conference. She has also presented to high school students about career and volunteer opportunities in Alzheimer’s care, and has mentored people who have family members with dementia. “I just love what I do at English Rose Suites and love our residents; they’re like my family,” Silvia says.
Outside of her career, Silvia is passionate about spending time with her family and participating in sports such as running and tennis.
